We started a Vocational Training in Tourism program to provide career development to the underprivileged youth in Delhi.
Open Eyes and the Yuva Parivartan worked with Naidu Lajwanti, a tourism consultant, to designed a tourism program or people of 18-25 years of age. Most of these youths have limited access to education and face a lack of employment opportunities. The objective is to support them in finding employment.
In August 2014, we developed our fist pilot program in Vocational Training in Tourism to promote Inclusive Tourism in India. This course trained 12 young people with the concepts of travel and tourism, field exposure, English, motivation, cultural differences, personality development, and communication and entrepreneurial skills. After 90 hours of theoretical program the students underwent three months paid internship in the tourism sector, and nine of 12 students are now working.
Hari Om Sahoo
Hari Om is a 25-year old student who joined our tourism course. He is a trained swimmer and lifeguard and therefore had a job for six months of the year, during swimming season. The rest of the time, he helped his dad’s vegetable business. He was looking for a job that gives him a full-time employment all year when he joined our course.
Hari faced a grueling interview process, and succeeded in getting a job in the airport security wing of Indira Gandhi International Airport that pays him well. He says the spoken English training, mock interviews, and world geography knowledge that he learned during our tourism course helped him land the job.
